India Witnesses 2 Gas Leak accidents in Visakhapatnam and Chhattisgarh

| | ,

India has recently witnessed 2 severe cases of work-place accidents, as several people of Visakhapatnam (AP) and Raigadh (Chhattisgarh) have died due to gas leak from factories on 7th May.

The infrastructural development of any nation is not perceivable by the kind of structures built over there, but by the safety of the residents living there.

As far as the infrastructural growth of India is concerned, there is much scope of improvement. Today, we dream of developing a network of smart cities. However, we lag far behind other nations when it comes to hazard management and workplace safety management. This is what is evident from the recent cases of gas-leak in Visakhapatnam (AP) and Raigadh (Chhattisgarh), that have brought back the haunting memories of Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984.

Several people have lost their lives and many others injured due to the carelessness of factory owners. Let us understand the two cases in-depth and discuss important measures to avoid such mishaps.

Gas-Leak accident of Visakhapatnam

A lethal chemical gas has leaked from the LG Polymer plant of Gopalapatnam, which is located on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam city. The accident has occurred during the early hours of 7th May 2020. The poisonous gas quickly spread to nearby villages situated in a 5km radius and killed 11 residents on the spot. Besides above 1,000 people have been badly affected and are in critical condition.

Gas-Leak accident of Chhattisgarh

Another incident of the Gas leak has taken place at a paper mill of Chhattisgarh’s Raigadh district on 7th May 2020 at night. At least 7 workers were affected severely and were immediately hospitalized after being exposed to the poisonous styrene gas while they were cleaning the factory. Out of these, 3 have been shifted to the capital, Raipur.

Cause of the Gas-Leak accidents

The major cause of such tragic incidents is the sheer lack of proper occupational safety measures. If the required provisions for workplace safety are not in place, the workers become prone to the potential hazards as the ones discussed above. Sometimes, even the surrounding environment and people are trapped in such accidents, as we see in the gas leak incidents in Visakhapatnam and Chhattisgarh.

The efficient workplace safety management system can be achieved only through the proper benchmarks such as ISO 45001 certification.

Role of ISO 45001 certification

ISO 45001:2018 is the occupational health & safety (OH&S) management system standard. It specifies the requirements for desirable occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system within an organization.

The ISO 45001 certification benchmark provides clear guidelines on how the work conditions of an organization should be.
