The ban on exporting wheat and wheat products will continue this year. It was put in place last May because there was less wheat grown. Let’s understand this latest update from the government’s side.
India to Continue Wheat Export Ban
Subodh K Singh, an Additional Secretary in the Department of Food, stated that the export of wheat will not be permitted.
He also mentioned that India is not a major wheat exporter and only does so when there is an excess of wheat produced.
According to a report, the government’s purchase of wheat plays a crucial role in keeping the wholesale prices of wheat stable.
However, this year’s procurement has been significantly lower than the target of 34 million tonnes, despite the ongoing rise in prices.
As of May 21, the Food Corporation of India (FCI), responsible for government procurement, has acquired 26.14 million tonnes of wheat.
Wheat Production in India Expected to Be Lower Than Last Year
The current trend suggests that the total procurement is anticipated to reach around 27 million tonnes by the end of this year’s procurement and harvest season, as reported by ET.
There has been a decline in the amount of wheat procured in Uttar Pradesh, the largest wheat-producing state in the country.
This year, the procurement stands at approximately two million tonnes in Uttar Pradesh, which is lower than the expected figure of 3.5 million tonnes, according to the report.
