The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a notification making it mandatory for sweet shops to declare the expiry date or ‘best before date’ of all sweets available in the shop. In this article, we will discuss on FSSAI notification on sweet shops

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced an order making it necessary for sweet shops to declare the expiry date or ‘best before date’ of all sweets available in the shop. The order will come into effect from October 1. Now, at the sweet shop, it will be mandatory to state the ‘best before date; in front of all the sweets. Now, the sweets will have to be sold before the expiry date.

The FSSAI has also directed to mention the date of making the sweets on its labelling while selling them. Earlier, the FSSAI had stated that sweet shops will have to mandatorily mention the date of manufacture on the labels. “Further, in the public interest and to ensure food safety, it has been instructed that in case of non-packaged/loose sweets the container or tray holding sweets at the outlet should perform the “date of manufacturing” and “best before date” of the said products.

There are further points regarding the new FSSAI notification on sweet shops. Some of them are –

  • “The FBOs shall display the ‘Best Before Date’ of sweets depending on the quality of the products.
  • Also, food business operators must obtain an FSSAI registration or FSSAI food licence.
  • The FSSAI has also asked all FBOs selling in sweets to comply with these directions and added that food safety commissioners should ensure compliance.
  • The food regulator stated that the decision was based on various complaints about the quality and adulteration of sweets, mostly during the festive season.
