FSSAI announced an order on 24 items even as it operates on regulations for GM foods. From January 1, 2021, importers of 24 major food crops will have to compulsory proclaim that the products are not genetically-modified and that they also have a non- GM origin. No-GM certificate compulsory for imported food crops

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proved with this declaration to assure that only non-GM food commodities come into the country.

The 24 food crops contain apple, eggplants, maize, wheat, melons, pineapple, papaya, plum, potatoes, rice, soybean, sugarbeet, sugarcane, tomato, sweet pepper, squash, flaxseed, bean plum, and chicory.

Environmental groups have been disagreeing that imported foods constantly contain genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Stricter inspections at ports

The FSSAI is in the procedure of framing regulations on GM foods. While a draft regulation on that is under reflection, the latest GM order, in the interim, is expected to tighten safety assessments of imported food crops at ports.

In an order published on Friday, the FSSAI stated that It has been agreed that every consignment of these imported food products shall be attended with a non-GM-origin-cum-GM-free certificate issued by the skilled national authority of the exporting country.

Importers will require to declare that the product is ‘of non-GM origin, does not contain genetically modified organism, and is also not genetically altered.

Further Notification by FSSAI

The FSSAI order confessed this is being done to assure that only non-GM food crops are imported into India, pending frame of regulations related to genetically-engineered or amended food products.
