Good news for importers as there is the latest update for importing watermelon seeds. As per the latest updates, DGFT has launched a new notification for importing watermelon seeds. This article discusses the recent updates about DGFT grants unrestricted import status for watermelon seeds.
What is “Free” or “Unrestricted” status in Import?
The DGFT does not need to approve the import of goods that are listed in the import policy as “Free” or “Unrestricted”. However, in order to be imported into the nation, “Restricted” items need permission or a license from the authorities.
DGFT notification grants unrestricted import for watermelon seeds
To permit the import of watermelon seeds from Kandla and Mundra Ports through September 30, 2022, the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has notified a modification to the Import Policy Condition under the Foreign Trade Policy 2015-2020 (FTP). Watermelon seed imports were restricted until September 30, 2022 as per previous regulation.
However, the DGFT recently announced through a notification that shipments of watermelon seeds made by September 30, 2022, from the exporting nations may be permitted for clearance at Indian Customs ports. When the Bill of Entry is submitted and the items are delivered to the customs authorities for inspection before October 31, 2022, the shipments will be considered cleared.
Impact of “Unrestricted” Status for Import of Watermelon Seeds
Water melon seeds with the ITC(HS) code 12077090 may now be imported till September 30, 2022. However, Only the ports of Mundra (INMUN1) and Kandla (INIXY1) can be used for the import of the watermelon seeds as per the announcement.
Other Eligibility Criteria for Import of Watermelon Seeds
- Importer must have IEC Code and AD Code Registration.
- Only one application against one IEC will be considered
- Similarly, only one application of AD Code Registration will be registered at a port as per the recent update – Only 1 AD Code Registration for all ports
- FSSAI Registration
- Import consignments should reach the Indian ports on or before September 30, 2022.
