INDIAsize Project to Address Inconsistencies in Clothing Fits

The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, has initiated the INDIAsize project to establish standardized body sizes for the Indian apparel sector.

By gathering anthropometric data from over 25,000 individuals, the project aims to address inconsistencies in clothing fits and enable retailers and manufacturers to produce well-fitted garments for Indian body types.

The project’s findings will also have applications in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, fitness, art, and gaming, promoting the development of ergonomically designed products for the Indian population.

According to an official, the IndiaSize project is nearing completion and is expected to be launched in the next 2-3 months.

This initiative aims to cater to Indian consumers’ needs and reduce imports by offering customized sizes.

A similar effort is also underway for footwear.

In FY23, India’s readymade garment exports reached $16.1 billion, a 1.1% increase from the previous year, while imports of apparel and clothing accessories rose by 42% to $941.83 million.
