Remove ‘100% Fruit Juice’ label else FSSAI Registration suspend

| |

The FSSAI has taken a serious step to safeguard public health. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered all local food businesses to stop using the ‘100% fruit juices’ label on reconstituted fruit juice products. This rule takes effect right away. However, businesses can use existing packaging till September 1, 2024.

Misleading Claims Under Scrutiny

FSSAI has concluded that, according to the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018, there is no provision for making a ‘100%’ claim. Such claims are misleading. Because, the primary ingredient is water, and the fruit content is present only in limited concentrations.

Clear Labelling Requirements

FSSAI’s regulations now require that the term ‘reconstituted’ be clearly stated on the label.  This is mandatory if the juice is made from water & fruit concentrates or pulp, Thus, it ensures that consumers are not misled about the product’s actual content. Additionally, FBOs must adhere to the standards for fruit juices as outlined in the FSSAI Rules and Regulations.

Labelling and Display Standards

Moreover, products must be labelled in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020. In addition, If a product contains added nutritive sweeteners exceeding 15g per kilogram, it must be labelled as ‘sweetened juice’. This move is aimed at providing consumers with clear and accurate information about the products.

Ensuring Transparency and Accountability

The enforcement of these regulations reflects FSSAI’s proactive approach. This is to address deceptive marketing practices. Furthermore, the new announcement is to  make consumers well-informed. So, FBOs are now tasked with updating their labels and marketing materials to comply with these standards. Otherwise they will risk having their FSSAI registration suspended.

This development is a significant step towards greater transparency and accountability.  By ensuring that labels accurately reflect the product contents, FSSAI is promoting healthier choices. In addition, this move ensures the rights of consumers are protected. As the deadline approaches, FBOs must take immediate action to align with these regulations.
