Brief details of Tihar Jail Applied FSSAI License

On Tuesday, the Officials claimed that the Tihar prison complex’s jail number 2 received the FSSAI’s “Eat Right” accreditation, indicating that 1,000 convicts were fed clean and nutritious meals.

According to Delhi Food Commissioner Neha Bansal, the certification process involved rigorous work and multiple levels of improvements based on the Food Safety Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI) “Eat Right Campus” benchmark and a pre-audit by a team from the Delhi Food Safety department and Training Partner Indraprastha Academy Foundation.

Tihar jail applied for FSSAI License, and Tihar Prison was the first prison in the country to launch such a project, they claimed, and the process to make it an ‘Eat Right’ campus began in 2019.

Sandeep Goel, Director General (Delhi Prisons), stated the department undertook a series of inspections over some time, based on which Central Jail Number 2 in Tihar was certified as an Eat Right Campus, according to FSSAI rules. Similar inspections would be conducted out in other Delhi Prisons facilities shortly, according to jail officials.

Tihar Jail applies for FSSAI License after implementing considerate updates

To get the certification, the Tihar Jail has followed all the FSSAI guidelines properly. The pre-audit report has been created after detailed recommendations and observations to improve sanitation, hygiene, and food safety processes.

Furthermore, During the process, 950+ offenders received training in cleanliness, food safety, and sanitation. Workers in kitchens and factories are also included in the list of people who have got the training under Standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“The COVID-19 problem halted the work, but after the pandemic situation stabilized, it picked up again.” “A third-party organization performed the final audit, and a request for recognition was made to the FSSAI,” she explained.

What is FSSAI Registration?

The FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is a self-governing organization that regulates the quality and standard of the food industry in India. The organization is being regulated independently within the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Government of India.

Every food business operator associated with the manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution, and sale of food products has to obtain FSSAI Registration or License. FSSAI Registration differs from FSSAI License in that FBOs should get the appropriate registration or license based on the size and nature of their operation. All food merchants, manufacturers, and restaurants are compelled to get a 14-digit license number printed on their food items.

FSSAI’s Eat India Right Program

According to a jail official working on the project, it’s encouraging to see that inmates are willing to participate in ongoing training and improvement efforts.

Officials said the Eat Right accreditation is a validation of food quality and hygiene, indicating that convicts will receive quality meals, and those food items manufactured in the jail for sale will also fulfill the country’s food regulator FSSAI’s hygiene and quality criteria.

Further, the Eat Right India campaign is an initiative of the Government of India and FSSAI to transform the country’s food system to assure safe, healthy, and sustainable food for all people. Thus, FSSAI is continuously working to establish high-quality standards and we can also implement those in our food business by applying for FSSAI Registration.
