Country of Origin of Products Mandatory on Government e-Marketplace

It’s mandatory to specify the country of origin of products while listing them on Government e-Marketplace. PM Sh Narendra Modi has announced new guidelines for  GeM Registration to make Aatmanirbhar Bharat or Self- Reliant India.

To promote Make in India drive, the Government has decided to implement this new rule on the GeM Platform.

 

Country of origin of goods listed on GeM portal

To promote Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self- Reliant India) and the ‘Make in India’, the online trading platform for state-run agencies – Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has made it compulsory for sellers to mention ‘country of origin’ on products they want to sell via the platform.

Finance Minister of India Smt Nirmala Sitharaman has tweeted in this regard-

Moreover, If sellers, who are already selling their products on the GeM, are notified continuously to upload the country of origin details. Also, if any seller fails to do the same will be removed from Government e-Marketplace.

This has come after Indo-Chinese conflict over the eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley, in which 20 brave Indian jawans have lost their lives while defending the Indian Borders.

Government has asked to not use any Chinese telecom equipment during its 4G upgradation.

Percentage of national content of products

GeM has also activated a specification of the percentage of national content in the products. With this new feature on the marketplace, the Country of Origin, as well as the local content percentage, are visible across all products. This will promote the Vocal for Local vision 

Most significantly, the ‘Make in India’ filter has now been activated on the site. Moreover, Buyers now can opt to buy only those items that meet the minimum 50% local content requirements.
