These commodities must comply with specific packaging and labelling regulations to ensure accurate information and fair trade practices .
Importer Registration Certificate: This is required by individuals or establishments importing pre-packaged commodities into India.
Packer and Manufacturer Registration Certificate: It is necessary for those who are engaged in the field of manufacturing, packing or labelling goods within India.
Dealer Certificate: For businesses involved in selling or distributing pre-packaged commodities.

The duration of a Legal Metrology Certificate may vary depending on the type of certificate but is usually five years. After this period, the certificate must be renewed to continue business operations legally.
Prohibition of non-standard units such as their quotation, publication or display is provided under section 19 of the Legal metrology act, 2009.
It states that no one shall quote, publish, or display any unit other than the standard unit of weight, measure or number in relation to a commodity service or industrial measurement. A violation can lead to penalties being issued and legal procedures being pursued against an individual.

Registration within 90 Days: An importer should register within ninety days from date of importation.
Renewal of Certificate : Every five years you need to renew a legal metrology certificate to be renewed for continued validity.
