Biz must display GSTIN on its signboards
With the new Goods and Services Tax law in the country, the government has made it mandatory for traders and businesses to display their GSTIN on their business signboards. GSTIN is now one of the basic requirements. It stands for Goods and Services Tax Identification Number, will be a 15 digit number, often abbreviated as GSIN. Those dealers who have chosen the composition scheme are also required to make their status public and have to disclose their status that they are not permitted to collect taxes from the people. The government has adopted a strict policy under the new regime that the business entities who fail to generate the certificate of registration within the period of 90 days can get their provisional ID canceled. The tax official said that every taxable person needs to display his GST Identification Number on the signboard.
What is GSTIN?
GSTIN or the Goods and Services Tax Identification Number is a 15 digit number for the Identification of a business and trade. The number will be received by taxpayers after registering with the GST Network Portal. A Tax official said that the Goods and Services Identification Number, sometimes GSIN is a legal requirement. There is no charge or fee to enroll under GST and obtain GSTIN. The new Identification Number will replace the unique TIN(Taxpayer Identification Number) issued under the Value Added Tax law by the State authorities.
The senior Tax official statement
A senior tax official said, “Every taxable person is required to display his GSTIN number on the name board or signboard of business and is also required to display his registration certificate in business premises so that a citizen can easily find out whether a person is registered or not.”
The official further added that The GST Identification Number is a legal requirement so that the citizens can find out whether the person from whom he is buying is entitled to collect tax from him or not. The other such disclosures under the GST law is a mandatory requirement in order to bring the transparency in the system.
Key points about GSTIN
- Every taxable person will be granted a state-wise PAN-based GSTIN.
- The GSTIN is absolutely free to obtain.
- The first two digits of GSTIN will represent the State code, as per the Indian census 2011.
- The next ten digits of the number will be the PAN number of the taxpayer.
- The thirteenth digit will be assigned on the basis of the registration number within a state.
- The fourteenth digit will be Z by default. It has no use.
- The last digit of this number may be an alphabet or a number. It will be the check code.
