Supreme Court extends the due date for Aadhaar-linking to PAN Card & Social Welfare Schemes
The online linking Aadhaar to personal information has been a matter of tumult these days as there has been much fickleness from government end regarding this issue.
However, the government has finally proclaimed the final due dates for the interlinking of Aadhaar number with the PAN Card and social welfare schemes run by government, mobile and banking services, for all those citizens who have not yet gone through this procedure.
The final deadline for the online linking of Aadhaar number with the PAN Card and social welfare schemes has been extended to June 30 from the previous deadline that was 31st March 2018. The decision to postpone the last date for Aadhaar-PAN linking has been taken by the Supreme Court after due consideration.
However, the due dates for the interlinking of Aadhaar number with mobile and banking services will remain unchanged, i.e. 31st of March. Earlier this month, the apex court had predicted about the aforesaid deferral of Aadhaar-linking due to the deliberation by Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) over this issue.
Up to now, over 33 crore PAN Cards have been issued, out if which nearly 17 crore have been already linked with the Aadhaar number of the respective tax assessees. This is more than 50% of the total PAN card-bearers.
This is the fourth time that CBDT has extended the due date for Aadhaar-PAN linking, earlier deadlines being July 31, August 31 and December 31, 2017. Evidently, there are numerous benefits of Aadhaar-PAN linking. It facilitates Easy verification of Income Tax Returns and simplifies many legal and tax compliances viz. GST registration, MSME registration, Import-Export Code Registration etc.
