35th GST Council Meeting Extends Annual GST Return Filing Due Date

At 35th GST Council Meeting that took place on 21st June 2019, many noteworthy decisions were taken. Very importantly, the New GST return filing model has been approved by the GST Council.

Another significant taken by the GST Council is that the due date for Annual GST Return filing in Form GSTR-9 has been extended till 31st August 2019. This is indeed given a sigh of relief to all the taxpayers having GST registration.

1. What decision has been taken by regarding Annual GST Return filing?

The GST Council in its 35th meeting has extended the due date for Annual GST Return filing in:-

Form GSTR-9
Form GSTR-9A for taxpayers having GST registration under Composition Scheme and
Reconciliation Statement or GST Audit Report in Form GSTR-9C

The Due date for filing the Annual GST Returns is now 31st August 2019.

2. What was the earlier due date for Annual GST Return filing?

The deadline for the Annual GST Return filing was previously 31st March 2019. The deadline had been extended from 31st March 2019 to 30th June 2019.

The Annual GST Return filing due date has now been further extended to 31st August 2019.

3. Why the due date for Annual GST Return filing has been extended?

The GST council has notified that on account of the hindrances and glitches faced by the taxpayers having GST registration in furnishing the annual returns FORM GSTR-9, GSTR-9A, and GST Audit Report in GSTR-9C, representations were made by various Tax as well as Professional Bodies to further extend the due date.

Hence, it has been decided to extend the due date for furnishing these returns and reconciliation statements up to 31st August 2019.
